Managing the energy transition, a mission to be met through a diversity of professions.
In August 2015 a law on the energy transition for green growth was voted. Its objective? To allow France to strengthen its energy independence, to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and to give concrete tools to companies, communities and individuals to accelerate green growth. It seems all the more topical in the current context: the war in Ukraine and our dependence on Russian fossil fuels, on the one hand, imply this need for energy independence. Global warming, now palpable following the droughts experienced this summer 2022, requires on the other hand to get out of polluting fossil fuels and to accelerate the development of renewable energies. What are the objectives of this law? What actions will be taken? What skills will be needed? Employment and training are powerful levers of action. We speak to you about it!
The objectives of the energy transition
The great challenges of energy transition are to be met in many sectors such as the energy industry, transportation, building or urban development. In this article, we are going to talk to you about the energy transition via the development of renewable energies, at the source of the transformation of all these sectors of activity.
The necessary development of renewable energies (RE)
In France, 40% of our electricity comes from nuclear power, 28% from oil, 16% from natural gas, 14% from renewable energies and waste and 2% from coal. To fight against climate change and reduce the share of fossil fuels on which we are dependent, developing renewable energies is a necessary objective.
What are the different ENR ?
- the wind, exploited thanks to terrestrial and marine wind turbines, which produces electricity,
- the sun, thanks to solar panels, which produces heat and electricity,
- the tide, whose energy is used in a tidal power plant to produce electricity,
- the rivers, whose current is produced in hydraulic power stations to produce electricity,
- biowaste, which once methanized in power plants, gives biogas,
- geothermal energy or "heat from the earth", which is used in geothermal power plants to generate electricity.
What does the law say?
The law of energy transition for green growth, aims for example, to increase the share of renewable energy from 19.3% currently to 32% of final energy consumption in 2030. For this, projects are underway such as
- the renovation and implementation of new hydroelectric power plants.
- Offshore wind projects on the French coast: the project is to build 50 offshore wind farms by 2050.
- Development of photovoltaic energy: the Multi-Year Energy Plan (MPE) sets the objective of increasing the number of photovoltaic plants to reach a total capacity of between 15 and 25 GW by 2028.
Employment to meet energy transition objectives
According to a study published by the International Energy Agency (IAE), the energy transition to renewable energies should lead to the creation of approximately 200,000 net jobs in France by 2030.
Just for a wind power project, many jobs are needed to meet all stages of the life cycle of the wind turbine: sourcing of materials, construction, dismantling, recycling ... require skills in research and development, project management, engineering, manufacturing of components, construction, operation or maintenance.
The creation of jobs in connection with new energy projects will also be necessary. For example, the very first wind farm in Saint-Nazaire has already created 3,500 jobs on land and at sea. As the project is to create 50 jobs by 2050, the industry will be recruiting!
Then, new innovations are to be created, developed and amplified to lead the energy transition, such as :
- the development of new energy sources such as osmotic energy, which is the desalination of salt water to produce electricity,
- the production and use of hydrogen,
- smart grids, which integrate computer technology to better manage electricity production.
To implement the energy transition in organizations and territories, managerial, legal, economic and political skills are also essential to change the strategies and business models of organizations and lead transition projects in the territories. Here are 4 training courses that enable you to develop these specific skills...
