5 necessary steps to find an impact job

According to a study conducted by the Join Indigo school with 80 people, when people in professional (and ecological) transition are asked "What are the main obstacles you face today?", 28% say they do not know where to start and 18% do not feel legitimate. 🤦‍♀️

They are lost and do not know which path to take. Do I need to train? What do recruiters ask? How can I be legitimate? Do I have the necessary skills?

To help you in your reflection and to take the right path, we present you the 5 necessary steps to find a job with impact!

1. Establish your diagnosis 🔎

Before you jump on the first job offer, take the time to ask yourself the right questions. Start by doing some introspection by asking yourself:

  • What do I like to do?
  • What are my skills?
  • What values are important to me?
  • What causes do I care about?

Once you've taken that time, look at the sustainability market and try to figure out what you could do.

  • What type of structure do I want to work in?
  • What sector do I like?
  • Which companies are recruiting?
  • What type of profile are they recruiting?

What we can tell you is that the job of climate project manager (also called carbon consultant, or decarbonation manager) is the most sought-after impact job in 2022!

Having done this work, you will be able to acquire the skills you lack (or not) to do an impact job and make a more informed choice. It will save you time!

2. How to be on the level? 😎

In order to feel legitimate, you need to identify the current skills that can serve you again in your new job as well as those specific to the one you are aiming for.

If we take the example of the job of climate strategy consultant, we know that soft skills such as project management, sense of organization, the spirit of synthesis are necessary to be competent in this job. On the other hand, other skills such as mastering regulations are acquired through training. The good news is that it is not necessary to have a Master's degree in Sustainable Development. If you are interested in climate strategy, train on this topic specifically (with Indigo for example) and don't waste your time training on all CSR issues 😉

3. Meet new people 💬

You've probably been told this but it's super important. You need to interact with people who are doing your dream job or impact jobs that you don't know about. There's nothing like a testimonial to help you project yourself into a new job! Because job descriptions on Google are great but they are not enough and lack a bit of human touch 😉

So we add on Linkedin, even if we don't know the person, we send messages and make phone calls! Be bold. You'll see that people will be very happy to share their experience and help you!

And the ultimate if you want to be sure to meet the right people: come to Indigo events (breakfasts, aperitifs...) and try to go to fairs like Talents for the Planet.

4. Know how to put yourself forward ✨

When you apply for an impact job, you put forward your skills, your soft skills and your personal commitments.

So on your CV, don't forget your interests (ecology, gender equality...) because they really make the difference. Are you involved in an association? Even better! This is highly valued by recruiters because it is a way of training you and showing your interest in the theme you have chosen.

5. Face reality 💪

Now, get dressed up... Once you get to the stage of meeting a recruiter, it is important to adopt the right behavior to seduce them!

Put forward your expertise and the speciality you have acquired during your training or professional career.

Be humble and don't hesitate to tell a story about a project that didn't work out! In the world of impact, these things happen often. What matters are the lessons you learn from them.

Show that you are proactive with an "intrapreneur" mindset.

And most importantly, be yourself and they will see your commitment!
