Description of the mission

About us

Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) is a values-driven organisation working with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to protect the world’s rainforests and uphold their human rights. Since 1989, RFUK has partnered with forest peoples and grassroots organisations to secure land rights, challenge destructive industries, and influence laws and policies that safeguard forests and the people who depend on them.

Our mission is clear: to combine human rights and environmental protection to tackle deforestation. From the Congo Basin to the Amazon, our work has helped communities protect millions of hectares of rainforest. With a growing team of passionate advocates for social and environmental justice, we are committed to scaling up our impact to confront the accelerating climate and biodiversity crises.

About the role

The post holder will lead selected areas of RFUK’s campaigning on climate, forests and community rights across the Congo Basin, with a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Together with local partners, forest communities and other allies, they will develop and implement campaigns to address escalating threats posed by logging and extractive industries, associated infrastructure development, and the rapid expansion of carbon market projects. The role will also involve managing funded projects within areas of responsibility, ensuring their effective delivery and impact, and providing support to partners in campaigning and project implementation. You can download the full job description here.

Location

This role may be based in London on a hybrid basis, or undertaken remotely from France or the Democratic Republic of Congo, with hybrid working possible where appropriate. Candidates must already have the right to work in one of these locations. Please note that RFUK is unable to cover relocation costs.

Benefits

We offer 30 days annual leave, Employee Assistance Programme, learning and development allowance, and four weeks of work-from-anywhere flexibility.

How to apply

To submit your application, kindly complete the online application form by 14 October at 9AM (London time). All applications should be submitted in English. Please be aware that the form will be anonymised for review by the panel. CVs and cover letters will not be considered.

Regrettably, due to the large number of applications we usually receive, it is not possible to write to you should you not be shortlisted for an interview. If you have not heard from us within 10 working days of the closing date, please assume that your application has not been successful on this occasion.

Interviews with shortlisted candidates will be held online on Thursday 22 October. Please let us know in your application if you are available to attend an in-person interview on this date.

Profile

About you

You are a strategic, collaborative and values-driven campaigner with a deep commitment to social justice, environmental protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and forest communities. You bring strong experience in policy, advocacy or campaigning, ideally in an NGO, charity or action-research setting, and are confident developing and delivering impactful campaigns particularly in Africa.

Fluent in English and French, you are an excellent communicator who can translate complex issues into compelling advocacy, media and public-facing materials, while building strong relationships with partners, communities, coalitions, donors and decision-makers.

You are comfortable managing projects and budgets, supporting local partners, working across multinational teams and travelling regularly within the Congo Basin and internationally to help advance lasting change

We are looking for someone with an interest in developing their skills as we take on new challenges in delivering our new vision and strategic plan. The role represents an exciting opportunity for candidates with the necessary aptitude, flexibility and ambition, as well as a strong commitment to our mission.

Above all, if you are passionate about social and environmental justice and ready to help shape RFUK’s future, we would love to hear from you.
