Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

About the Opportunity

Our tech platform is already licensed to support 54 million customer accounts in 17 countries, and we aim to serve 100 million globally by 2027.

Our technology team has grown extremely quickly as a result. With this rapid growth, we are looking for proactive Product Managers to join the Industry Implementation team and work with our developers to ensure what they do has the highest impact for our customers.

The Industry Implementation product group owns all of the industry-related bits of Kraken, which is anything that is inherently market-specific and the nitty-gritty of how to operate in the Electricity and Gas industries in any/all countries we’re present. This is a complex and technical area, with a high level of complexity and regulatory compliance involved in each market.

This newly formed group has not previously operated within a traditional product structure. As such, there is a unique opportunity to shape and define the products within this domain from the ground up.

Not all of the products are finalised and fully defined, but some of the product areas are as follows (not a complete list, there may be more available):

- To ensure reliable, up-to-date supply point information through a single authoritative source, aligning with industry data and compliance needs, while offering an intuitive, user-friendly interface for efficient and centralised data management.

- To offer a centralised system for managing and coordinating all types of on-site appointments and jobs across countries, featuring an efficient, user-friendly interface for seamless handling of change requests, service orders, and scheduling, while providing standardised job status tracking and updates for reliable, transparent information.

- To provide a centralised approach to manage and integrate multiple workflows across the customer and industry life cycle, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and offering a standardised workflow orchestration to optimise, scale, and improve global operational efficiency.

- To process settlement imbalances by checking for discrepancies between reported and actual charges, using historical data and forecasting strategies to predict usage patterns, manage and verify distributor/settlement invoices, and ensure accurate payments, while allowing for territory-specific plug-ins to optimise integration and automatically flagging, rejecting, and claiming incorrect charges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage one or more products within the Industry Implementation product group, gaining deep knowledge of your specific product area across all 10 (and increasing) countries we operate in.
  • Engage in the initial stages of product development, helping to define and kickstart product missions, and participating in the discovery and team-building phases.
  • Collaborate closely with developers to ensure that products meet market-specific requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Drive the development process, ensuring that products are delivered on time and meet the highest quality standards.
  • Work with stakeholders to align product goals with business objectives and customer needs.
  • You’ll work in an international team with people from timezones between the west USA and New Zealand.  As such, you should also expect to have occasional out of hour calls with teams, although we try to work asynchronously (and we also try to take it in turns for any out-of-hours calls).

As your product develops and matures, your day to day will likely be:

  • Liaise with tech, operations, our clients and others to identify how best to manage your product.  You’ll spot problems, take ownership and see them through to resolution.
  • Gather technical requirements from internal and external stakeholders, define the approach and help write pitch documents and tickets so developers can hit the ground running.
  • Own the backlog of work to support development of your product.  We use Asana to keep track and prioritise what’s up next and what’s still to-do.
  • Report on the progress of products and projects, including new features and your team’s roadmap, across the wider organisation. This involves building, maintaining, and updating success metrics and KPIs to effectively measure and communicate the success and impact of our initiatives.
  • Help teams that are working on front-line support to quickly resolve issues.
  • Contribute to improving the product management community at Kraken, including thinking strategically and supporting other team members.

We put the customer first wherever we are in the business and work empathetically with one another to deliver the best possible outcomes.

What We're Looking For:

  • Prior experience in product management is preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience in the energy industry in at least one of the countries we operate in is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, capable of interacting with individuals at varying levels of technical expertise.
  • A confident communicator, comfortable collaborating with international teams to achieve global objectives.
  • Knowledge of another language where Kraken is currently, such as Spanish, Italian, German, French or Japanese is a plus.
  • A self-starter with a proactive approach, who sees problems and feels compelled to solve them, can self-learn, and engages with various people in the business to understand global operations.
  • Highly organised, methodical, and clear in ensuring projects progress smoothly from inception to completion. Demonstrated ability to manage products from conception through to launch.
  • Ability to discern priorities and identify what needs to be addressed immediately versus what can be deferred, aligning with the team's goals and strategic direction.
  • Adaptability to thrive in a dynamic, ever-changing environment. Experience in a fast-paced start-up or scale-up setting is advantageous.
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and dive into tasks, whether it's building out and prioritising our tech hiring roadmap, using SQL or data science notebooks to solve problems, or exploring our logging system.
  • We’re looking for people with a variety of skills and experience to build our team, so if you fit some (and not all) of the criteria, please do apply.

Why join us

  • This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of our expansion, playing a key role in defining and building products that have not been developed before. You will have the chance to shape the future of our platform and make a significant impact on our growth and success.
  • If you are a proactive Product Manager with a passion for tackling complex challenges and driving innovation, we would love to hear from you.

Why else you'll love it here

  • Wondering what the salary is for this position? Ask us! During our initial contact, this is something we always bring up, because we really want to match your experience with the right salary. The reason we don't talk about it here is that we have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
  • Octopus Energy has a unique culture: we won the award for Best Company to Work For in 2022, on Glassdoor UK we were voted one of the 50 Best Places to Work in 2022 and our CEO, Greg, recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our employees. In France, we were awarded the Happy at Work label, and ranked eighteenth out of a total of 1,675 structures in the category of companies where employees find the most meaning.
  • We are an organization where people learn, decide and build faster. Where they work autonomously, with extraordinary people, on innovative projects. Profit-sharing, flex-office, excellent mutual insurance, soft mobility package, coverage of part of the "pass navigo" above the legal minimum, and even special days off to invest in an associative project that's close to your heart... we want your investment to be rewarded by benefits you really care about!

At Octopus, we're looking for people who are genuinely caring and empathetic. Equal opportunities are important to us, and we're committed to providing an inclusive and fair working environment. We invite you to apply, whatever your age, gender, marital status, color, disability, pregnancy or parenthood, origin, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
