AXA Climate and ETHZ are looking for a joint intern who will support applied research in the domain of agriculture and biodiversity risk management.
In line with climate change commitment and with consideration of the massive biodiversity loss, agriculture need to change rapidly. A set of practices such as using cover crops, extending crop rotation, reducing tillage, and agroforestry can help to restore soil health and biodiversity (“regenerative agriculture”).
Your mission will be focused on evaluating how those practices impact yields, carbon emission/sequestration and biodiversity.
Since only few reliable empirical datasets exists on this topic, you will also have to work with bio-physical crop models (STICS, Daisy, CropSys) to gain insights on how regenerative agricultural practices will impact yields and other parameters.
Your main task will include
• Conduct a literature review on how regenerative agriculture impact yield
• List and explore existing datasets on regenerative agriculture
• Compare crop models in their ability to account for a change in agricultural practices
• Use crop models to evaluate the potential outcome of different scenarios of adoption of regenerative practices
Your work will by key to convince investors, commodity buyers, food processors and other actors of the agri-food value chain that regenerative farming has a high potential to transform agriculture and is worthwhile investing in.
