Description of the mission

🌍 about the company

Our mission at Versant is to build the ecological intelligence platform for infrastructure projects development, to enable any new project to have a net gain on biodiversity.

🤔 who are we?

The co-founders Luc and Martin met during an entrepreneurship program called Antler in Paris. Their complimentary backgrounds and impact-driven entrepreneurial spirit were a perfect match to work together. We have been quickly joined by Greta, our Lead Ecologist, who heads science initiatives. Meet the founding team here!

🗺️ where are we & where are we going?

Over the past year, we grew from 2 to 14 clients. During this rapid expansion, we learned a lot, iterated on our product, and consistently strengthened the quality of our services ⭐

To accelerate, we’ve raised our first round of funding. Our next goal is to strengthen our ops and sales capacity to establish ourselves as a key player in our initial market segment.

🧑‍💼 the position

We're hiring a Software Engineer to work alongside our CTO to own our compensation site identification product. You'll respond quickly to customer feature requests, architect new capabilities, and drive the technical decisions that keep us shipping fast while building for scale.

This role is equal parts builder and leader. You'll write code, review PRs, and get your hands dirty — but you'll also shape how we work and what we build next.

This is not a positon for someone who likes to be told what do work on and simply follow orders. We’re looking for someone that is able to jump into the chaos, understand the playing field, figure out what needs to be worked on, and truly own it.

We want you to be an experienced engineer, and we want you to work with AI. We need you to be able to leverage the power of AI to amplify and accelerate your own deep technical abilities.

This role is perfect for someone who wants to apply their engineering skills to a real problem in ecology and biodiversity conservation, who is eager to make a difference.

🧩 what you’ll do

  • Own the core product — Drive development of our site identification engine, from land filtering and species modeling to report generation.
  • Develop next-level features — Build data pipelines to continue to improve our modeling techniques, train new modeling approaches to generalize over larger regions, and more.
  • Ship features fast — Respond to customer requests with pragmatic solutions that balance speed and quality
  • Optimize for performance — Our pipelines process large geospatial datasets; make them faster and more reliable
  • Collaborate with the CTO — Help define the product roadmap and make build-vs-buy decisions
  • Set technical direction — Establish patterns, review code, and level up the team

☝ Please note these are examples. This may vary based on company needs.

Profile

🥇 you are the “ideal” candidate for this position if :

  • Tech Skills
  • Strong Python fundamentals and comfort with geospatial data (rasterio, GDAL, GeoJSON, COGs)
  • Experience building data-intensive backends (processing pipelines, async tasks, APIs)
  • Experience with training machine learning models and managing data infrastructure associated with them.
  • Bonus: experience with species modeling, ecological data, and R.
  • Other Skills
  • Comfort with ambiguity; we're a small team and priorities shift
  • Pragmatic approach to architecture — you optimize for shipping, not perfection
  • You are mission-driven, eager to have a tangible impact on biodiversity and energy transition.
  • You are structured and reliable, with strong execution and follow-through.
  • You are client-oriented, at ease in written and spoken communication.
  • You are quick to learn, curious about both business and technical topics.
  • You enjoy working in small, fast-moving teams, and thrive in ambiguity.
