➔ Description of the mission

At Contexte, we produce in-depth political intelligence that enables the actors of democracy to shape the world. Founded in 2013 as a European media organisation, we are radically independent: the company is 100% employee-owned and funded exclusively by its subscribers.

As we move into a phase of expansion — new verticals, international growth, a stronger brand footprint — we are scaling the Design team, which works hand-in-hand with Brand, Product Marketing and Growth in a bilingual (French–English) environment.

We are opening a Senior Art Director – Marketing & Brand (7+ years) position: a hybrid role blending creative direction, visual design and hands-on marketing production.

Reporting to the Director of Design, you will help define and embed a sustainable, coherent and ambitious marketing art direction — within a team that values autonomy, accountability and curiosity.

We are looking for a Senior Art Director who brings strong creative ownership to marketing campaigns, with the ability to work confidently across multi-platform digital environments and within bilingual, multicultural contexts. Demonstrated, hands-on experience in concepting and producing high-quality work — whether in an agency setting or on creatively demanding, fast-paced projects — is essential.

The role is based in Paris, with a minimum in-office presence of three days per week to ensure close, meaningful collaboration with the Design and Marketing teams.

Responsibilities

Art Direction & Craft

You bring a refined graphic sensibility, a sharp typographic eye and the ability to shape a coherent visual language over time — lifting the creative bar across the board.

  • Create marketing visuals that are clear, restrained and highly considered, in line with Contexte’s identity.
  • Use typography as a core driver of expression: hierarchy, rhythm, balance, density and narrative intent.
  • Build and sustain living visual systems — across formats and campaigns — that evolve without losing their edge or integrity.
  • Deliver or oversee end-to-end visual execution: typography, composition, imagery and iconography.
  • Elevate the creative quality of campaigns (social, ads, email, display, landing pages) through precision and intentionality.
  • Maintain an exacting standard of craft: coherence, accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.

Marketing Concept & Production

Working in close partnership with the Brand, PMM and Growth teams, you turn marketing intentions into visual propositions that are coherent, legible and commercially effective.

  • Distil messages into clear, structured and instantly graspable visual concepts.
  • Shape a visual narrative with intent: promise, proof points, rhythm, pacing, tension and points of focus.
  • Put forward strong creative directions: visual concepts, design principles, tone and calibrated levels of intensity.
  • Design and adapt multi-platform formats — particularly digital (social, ads, landing pages, email) — ensuring a consistent and distinctive visual language.
  • Design or refine landing pages by orchestrating hierarchy, spacing, proof points and conversion flow.
  • Produce smart variations in partnership with Marketing, operating with a genuine test-and-learn mindset.

Collaboration & Scoping

Acting as a hinge between Design and Marketing, you bring structure, clarity and focus to the creative process, ensuring that both teams operate with intention and alignment.

  • Partner daily with Brand, PMM and Growth to sharpen intentions, messages and priorities.
  • Play an active role within the Design team: uphold standards, contribute to reviews, and ensure continuity with the overarching art direction.
  • Streamline the end-to-end workflow: articulate visual intentions, define decision criteria, manage iterations, and anticipate risks.
  • Reframe briefs with precision: clarify the ask, surface blind spots, and probe for the right level of detail.
  • Set up alignment checkpoints that anchor objectives, messages, audiences, formats and constraints.
  • Bring a decisive visual point of view: clarify criteria, frame viable routes, and steer teams towards coherent, high-quality outcomes.

Organisation & production

You ensure a production process that is robust, structured and sustainable. You’re able to work in fast cycles without compromising quality, while contributing to organisational clarity and shared best practices within the Design team.

  • Structure files, naming conventions, versions and exports to ensure stability and clarity within a shared workflow.
  • Make full use of existing Figma systems (styles, grids, modules) to produce efficiently and reinforce visual consistency.
  • Build or adapt pages in a no-code tool (Webflow or equivalent) with accuracy and intent.
  • Prepare visual kits and lightweight systems to accelerate production cycles and support collaborative work.
  • Maintain a consistent level of quality, even under volume or time pressure.
  • Spot production dependencies and risks early — and plan accordingly.

Talent Management

  • Brief and oversee external partners (motion, illustration, photography) with clarity and high standards.
  • Align their deliverables with the visual identity and marketing objectives.
  • Ensure quality control that meets the brand’s expectations.

➔ Profile

We’re looking for a marketing Art Director who is already fully autonomous on these topics. This is not a first senior role, but the next step for someone who has already built, tested and sustained campaigns over time.

Required Experience

  • 7+ years’ experience in marketing design, digital art direction, brand design or an equivalent field.
  • Proven experience within a creative agency or within well-structured, campaign-driven marketing teams (Brand, PMM, Growth).
  • Strong, hands-on experience in digital campaigns (social, web, marketing formats) is essential; a multi-channel or hybrid background is a genuine plus.
  • Exposure to multi-country or multicultural environments is a significant advantage.

Core Skills

  • Typography expertise: shaping hierarchy, rhythm and balance to build a clear, confident visual language.
  • Systemic design & visual production: creating and maintaining visual systems that stay coherent over time, while ensuring clean, precise and reliable production across all formats.
  • Marketing concepting & user journeys: turning messages into clear visual concepts and structuring journeys (landing pages, assets) that are readable, well-hierarchised and conversion-oriented.
  • Visual test-and-learn: formulating clear hypotheses, proposing meaningful variations, and interpreting results to guide marketing decisions.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Autonomy & clarity: able to move forward without ambiguity, frame a topic and stand by your choices.
  • Structured communication: able to reframe, articulate criteria and facilitate alignment.
  • Demanding yet fluid collaboration: working effectively with Brand, PMM and Growth, with consistency and rigour.
  • French & English: advanced professional proficiency (C1 equivalent) in both languages. You can work, present and debate comfortably in one, and operate at an advanced level in the other. The Design team works mainly in French; the Marketing team primarily in English

Bonus Skills (not required, but appreciated)

  • Skills in motion, print or writing can broaden your creative range: shaping an identity in motion, producing high-quality print assets, or using writing as a design tool — defining an angle, structuring an idea, or crafting clear intent and sharp micro-copy. These abilities add coherence and depth to campaigns.

Tell Us About Yourself

We’re not looking for a cover letter — but a message that genuinely makes us want to meet you.

A few lines are enough: the goal is to understand how you think — what drives you, how you approach your craft, and what draws you to this role.

If you’d like, you can touch on:

  • Why this role feels like a coherent next step for you;
  • A project where you had to define a visual framework or clarify a complex brief;
  • What feeds your visual culture and creative instincts — beyond work.

It doesn’t matter which angle you choose: show us how you think, decide and create.

Recruitment Process:

Application (introduction message, portfolio, CV).

  1. HR interview with the recruitment officer.
  2. Interview with the Director of Design.
  3. Case study.
  4. Interview with two members of the Marketing team.
  5. Final interview with two members of the Executive Committee.
