Background

Foundation The London Story (TLS) is a think tank registered in the Netherlands, led by members of the progressive Indian diaspora. TLS aims to investigate hate speech and disinformation online and advocate for stronger platform and governance accountability.

TLS is looking for a drupal full-stack engineer to join our team and contribute towards monitoring and archiving hate speech made on social media network. The projects overall remit is to map actor-networks which are utilizing social media networks to instigate on-ground vigilantism and violence with a view to create high-quality evidence data-set that can be utilised for driving stronger policies and accountability towards online hate. The role of the drupal engineer will be to help our team of researchers, data-analyst and UX designer compile and present structured data that is available in public domain.

Duties and responsibilities

You will work together with a decentralized team of legal analysts, political analysts, data scientists and researchers to implement the project and document online hate speech. You will create a website for the project, ensure its user-friendliness, provide technical support, and help execute the project successfully. You will lead the project through the various phases of the software lifecycle, from design to implementation, testing, and ongoing support.

This is a position of fixed duration, until and including March 2023, with the possibility of extension depending on funding. The position must be based in the Netherlands. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Concretely, you will:

  • Build a website using Drupal, and be responsible for maintaining and running updates and related modules, as well as troubleshooting and fixing functional issues on the site;
  • Write clean, scalable, and high-performance front and backend code using PHP.
  • Participate in brainstorming discussions on strategy and design for data collection, propose new features that could be useful to the objective of the site and project, identify development timelines, recommendations and challenges,
  • Contribute to the team’s efforts to innovate and evolve, including strategy, accessibility, SEO, mobile trends, new frontend features and tools that might help further our goals;
  • Provide support to the web and data science teams with systems and code maintenance, testing and deploying code to production, monitoring subdomains;
  • Prepare and maintain developer documentation
  • Manage all uploaded media under compliance requirements
  • Run maintenance checks on a regular basis, revise, update, refactor and debug code
  • Perform critical security upgrades in a timely manner
  • Implement site changes and technical team feedback as it is finalized into deliverables
Profile

You should have

Hard skills

  • HBO, VBO in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field. An advanced degree is preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in Drupal application development or closely related software development
  • Ability to proactively build and manage a content management system (CMS) including managing regular site updates and back-end upgrades
  • Proven experience as a software engineer with Drupal and PHP framework along the whole Software Development Life Cycle
  • Experience in working with databases like Elasticsearch and MySQL will be preferred
  • Experience working with tools such as Git, Composer, NPM, Symphony, Twig, MySQL
  • Experience working on multi-website Drupal installations
  • Experience in integrating various frontend visualisation layers, like Graphana, Kibana with Drupal backend will be useful
  • Knowledge of Content, Entity, Views, Block, Form, Configuration, Hook…
  • Knowledge of building Drupal themes, modules, using Twig, override templates
  • Knowledge of front-end languages such as HTML and CSS.
  • Knowledge of JavaScript and PHP frameworks
  • Knowledge of Drupal security
