Data scientist - Geospatial & Remote Sensing Expert

Paris-based (France) with travel to emerging countries

Masae Analytics is a fast-growing start-up providing data analytics consulting services, using geospatial analysis, remote sensing, satellite imagery, machine learning, and data science to address our clients' needs.

We apply those skills to topics as diverse as climate change and agriculture, humanitarian projects, development programme impact evaluation, post-conflict damage assessments, rural connectivity, financial inclusion, etc.

Together with our sister company, Altai Consulting (www.altaiconsulting.com), Masae Analytics works for international organizations, foundations and development actors (the United Nations, the World Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.), and corporate ones in emerging and in post-conflict countries.

We are currently looking for an experienced Data Scientist capable of helping us make the most of new opportunities, including on the project management and business development sides. We are looking for candidates who are curious, open to new challenges andeager to discover new cultures and environments.

We offer long term (indefinite, French “CDI”) employment.

Job description

Key aspects of the Data Scientist – GIS Remote Sensing Expert mission will be to:

  • Manage projects and clients from start to finish
  • Interact with clients throughout projects and their delivery
  • Design and implement innovative data science approaches to answer clients’ briefs
  • Produce analytical reports and presentations
  • Conduct business development efforts and answer calls for proposals
  • Contribute to the development of Masae’s tools and processes
  • Keep track of technology developments and new applications
  • Maintain a general knowledge in our areas of interest (remote sensing and applications to climate monitoring, land use changes detection, existing open-data sources in our geographies of interest, etc.)

Profile

Requirements

General requirements:

- University degree in data science / geography / geospatial analytics

- 2 to 5 years of professional experience in data science

- Curiosity, flexibility, attention to details and strong work ethics

- Sensitivity to data security and confidentiality

- Eagerness to travel and to discover new culture

- Experience in international development and in humanitarian issues is a plus

- Very good English skills

- Strong belief in the value of team work

Technical requirements:

- Knowledge of Python, Data Science environments (IPython/Jupyter Notebook, Pandas, etc.)

- Experience in geospatial analysis or remote sensing

Nice to have:

- Knowledge of SQL and of its open-source implementations (Postgres, MySQL, SQLite)

- Knowledge of geographic analysis tools (PostGIS, QGIS) and of its Python libraries

- Comfortable with big data manipulation and parallel computing

- Knowledge of unix shell (OS X / Linux)

- Basic knowledge of web languages/frameworks (JavaScript, html, css, etc., Python web frameworks like Django, Flask)

- Team management experience
